Spring Decorating with Pantone’s Color of the Year

Mar 2017

Sinkology is proud to present Kristan Allen, our design expert and guest blogger who runs the @FarmhouseRedefined Instagram. Kristan is here to share some design ideas and inspiration around designing your home around your Sinkology sink.

I know we’re just getting into March, but I have spring fever in the worst way! We had a few 60-degree days in February and I think that just pushed me over the edge into yearning-for-spring territory. While we may not quite be there yet in terms of the great outdoors, that doesn’t mean we can’t bring some spring to our great indoors, right? In case you missed it, Pantone announced its 2017 color of the year in January. Lucky for all of us spring lovers, it’s a beautiful, fresh green appropriately named “Greenery.” Take a look below to see some of my favorite ways to incorporate this vibrant hue into your home.

Bring the Outdoors In

Green is the color of nature, so it makes sense to look outside for inspiration. The most obvious way to incorporate this color? Buy some house plants! I’ll be the first to admit that I do NOT have a green thumb. But with a little research, you can find plants that are easy to care for. I recently purchased a fiddle leaf ficus tree for our den and I love the fresh feel it gives to this room. I found a cute basket, lined it with a plastic tray and plopped ol’ Frankie (my kids name literally everything that comes into our house) right in it. He’s thriving so far…and with minimal effort on my part!

If you really don’t want to try your hand at keeping real plants alive, you can always go faux. I found this mini fiddle leaf at Ikea and love how it perks up my console table for spring.

Turn Ordinary into Extraordinary

I’m always looking for quick and easy centerpieces to dress up my kitchen island. I bought a few glass cylinder vases and placed them in a tray. It’s basically a blank canvas that takes me from season to season because I can vary the filler in a snap! One of my tricks – I shop the produce section of my grocery store. Here, I used a mixture of green pears and Granny Smith apples. The bright colors draw attention in a cheery way…and my kids are way more likely to grab fruit for a snack if it’s right in front of them. Win-win for everyone!

Favorite Green Accents

You’ll find no shortage of spring green décor in the stores and online this time of year. I could’ve created a mile-long list, but some of my faves include this Fern Circles Parsons Chair from Kirklands. It’s on clearance right now and would be the perfect way to brighten up a breakfast nook or dining table. I’m also loving these Bordered Outdoor Pillows from Ballard Designs. They have just a touch of spring green, you can personalize them with your favorite monogram and they’re indoor/outdoor…so they’ll look just as cute on your porch as they will on your couch! Finally, I couldn’t pass up these Floral Rim Dinner Plates from Pottery Barn. They’re whimsical, romantic and make it easy to bring spring to your tabletop. And here’s a tip: when I purchase patterned dinner plates like these, I alternate them with my regular dinner plates – so one setting will have a floral plate, the next setting will have a solid cream-colored plate, etc., etc. It breaks up the pattern and makes things a little easier on my wallet!
