How to Clean & Care for a Copper Sink

Jan 2019

Follow along as she shares a few tips & tricks on how to care for your beautiful copper sink.

Gorgeous Copper Sink

I have always had a thing for copper and admired copper sinks, but I never knew if a copper sink was really in the cards for me. After obsessing and drooling over copper sinks on Instagram I finally decided to reach out to Sinkology and inquire about one, and learn more about cleaning and caring for a copper sink.

I recently collaborated with Home Depot on a video: How to make Garbage Disposal Refreshers and Sinkology was thrilled to partner, so together we not only showcased an upgraded Moen garbage disposal, a Moen motion sense oil-rubbed bronze faucet, but also a spanking new gorgeous hammered copper sink by Sinkology.

Take a look at what my chipped and discolored porcelain sink and hard water stained faucet looked like before.

I am so in love with my new copper sink. I’m not a jewelry kinda girl, but this sink feels like my bling. This copper sink makes our kitchen pop and has become a beautiful centerpiece, giving our cocina added charm.

I named her Penny, and she’s my new BFF. She’s designed with the highest-grade, solid, pure copper and hammered by hand making her a one-of-a-kind piece.

Sinkology offers multiple options in sink material (as well as installation types), but today I’m going to specifically talk about copper sinks and how to care for and maintain them so that they last you a lifetime. Are you interested in purchasing a copper sink but intimidated? I highly recommend reading this post and seeing if a copper sink is for you. While copper sinks are a beautiful addition to any home they can take some special care and cleaning to preserve their beauty and function. After being gifted Penny I did my due diligence and researched proper ways of maintaining her beauty and charm.

TIPS FOR COPPER SINK CARE:

  1. Clean after each use with warm water, a gentle dish soap, and a soft cloth or sponge but be sure to avoid harsh and abrasive chemicals and cleaners.

  2. Never use scouring pads, steel wool, or any other hard scrubbing pad.

  3. Use baking soda and warm water to remove a stubborn stain from your sink’s surface.

  4. Dry your sink out after each use to prevent mineral deposits and green spotting.

  5. Always remove food debris (especially acidic foods) and dishes to prevent temporary discoloration and scratches to the sink’s surface.

  6. Apply a copper protectant or wax monthly (or whenever water no longer beads on its surface), such as Sinkology’s Copper Armor, to shield and shine your copper sink’s finish.

This living finish naturally occurs in copper, and over time, provides its natural anti-microbial properties which will continue to change and evolve over time. And because copper is a living metal, discoloration is inevitable but there are ways to reduce discoloration and natural spotting. Copper sinks bring an attractive appearance, a durable style, and a natural antibacterial to anyone’s kitchen. So, whether you want to preserve a polished look or desire a natural surface, a little routine maintenance will keep your sink looking gorgeous day after day.
