Holiday DIY: Easter Place Cards or Basket Tags

Easter is right around the corner and I’m trying to get a head start on my entertaining plans. We usually host an early dinner for our extended family, so I’m always looking for easy ways to do something special for this gathering. Sometimes it’s a fun dessert (strawberries dipped in white chocolate and orange sprinkles to resemble carrots!) and sometimes it’s a small favor to dress up the table a bit.
I thought something along these lines would be great this year, so I enlisted the help of my kiddos to create easy and super cute place cards that we’re planning to set out for each of our guests. My kids love to craft, so they jump at the chance to help with “special projects” like this. The supplies are minimal: salt dough ornaments in your preferred shape, some craft paints and markers, paint brushes and a little imagination!
A note on salt dough ornaments. I love them! I see them on Pinterest and in friends’ homes around the holidays and think they’re always so cute. But for the life of me, I cannot make smooth, uniform salt dough ornaments at home. Mine turn out lumpy and bumpy and usually crack during baking or shortly thereafter.
So how have I solved this problem? Etsy! Yes, you read that right. I buy salt dough ornaments on Etsy from people who have perfected the art of making salt dough ornaments. A quick search yields a ton of options in various shapes/sizes. They’re affordable and all the ones I’ve ordered have arrived in beautiful condition and ready for crafting! If you’d rather try your hand at making your own, there are a million different recipes on Pinterest and they’re all pretty easy (hello flour, salt and water). And if you have a fool-proof recipe, please share!
OK, now on to the fun part. I gathered our paints and markers and asked my kids what kinds of Easter pictures they wanted to paint. My son opted for a chick and my daughter requested a flower. The little chick we created here is my son’s fingerprint! We did the fingerprint first, let it dry and then used Sharpie markers to add eyes, a beak, feet and some grass.
My daughter wanted to draw her own flower, so we used a pencil eraser to make it easier to dot out petals and a center. Think outside the box when it comes to applying paint! Pencils, sponge brushes and other items you have around the house can be used to create fun shapes…and if you’re using washable paint, it’s usually pretty easy to clean up.
After our ornaments were dry, I used markers to add everyone’s names. I opted for ornaments with holes punched in the top because I wanted the option to add ribbon so people could hang them up after they take them home (I can already see these hanging from my mom’s kitchen window)! Adding ribbon also makes them perfect Easter basket or gift bag tags.
