Home Office Must-Haves

Aug 2017

Back to school is literally right around the corner and I’m feeling a mix of emotions this year. I’m always excited because I look forward to all things fall – crisp weather, baking, pumpkins. But it’s a little bittersweet this year, too, because my oldest officially starts kindergarten. Wow did those 6 years fly by!

To get into the back-to-school spirit, I thought I’d do a little round up of some of my favorite home office must-haves. I’m fortunate enough to do a lot of work from home, which is great. But it can be challenging if you don’t have the right set-up conducive to your work style. When I designed my office, I wanted to make sure it worked for me. So here are some of my favorite home office accessories that make working from home stylish and fun!

Books (and Not Just for Reference!)

Keeping books in a home office is hardly a trend-setting revelation, right? I love being surrounded by books of all kinds, but my favorite in particular are vintage books. They’re works of art with intricate covers and illustrations. One of my very favorite finds is a book from 1900 called How to Know the Wildflowers. It is filled with stunning botanical sketches – some in color and some in black and white. I’ve framed a few of the sketches around my home and enjoy leafing through the others in the book. I also love using books in my décor. Consider grouping them by color or arranging them with the spines facing inward so they look consistent on a shelf. You can also use them as risers. I loved this brass lamp, but it was a little short for my desk…so I propped it up on an old book about the Caribbean and now it’s the perfect height!

Metallic Accents

I love to work metallics into pretty much every room of my home. Little touches here and there go a long way in amping up the style of a space. So why not add a little glam to your desk accessories? I couldn’t pass up these gold jars filled with matching gilded office supplies. Because everyone needs gold thumb tacks in their life! A new desk is on my wish list…but until then, these shimmery accents definitely help to brighten things up.

Perfect Planner

I rely on the calendar in my phone for the majority of my daily reminders and appointments, but when it comes to keeping track of work and home to-do’s, I much prefer an actual planner. Call me old-fashioned, but I love keeping my notes in a planner and physically crossing things off my list! My favorite is the weekly version of Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner. It also comes in a daily version (pictured here from EmilyLey.com) with oh-so-pretty covers and an intuitive, functional format.

Plenty of Organization Options

I’m always surprised at how quickly a workspace can get cluttered. And if you’re anything like me, clutter is an instant drag on my ability to get things done. This means that I’m always looking for fun and creative ways to organize and store things. For example, I love having ribbon on hand – for gift wrapping, décor, etc. But spools of ribbon take up a lot of space in drawers and they get tangled, too. So I bought some small tension rods and put them in a couple of my built-in shelves. They’re perfect for organizing and they put my favorite ribbons right at my fingertips! I also used some metallic wire baskets to corral smaller items on my shelves. They look beautiful and help to “hide” stuff right out in the open.
