Copper’s ever-changing surface is one of the most beautiful and loved things about a copper kitchen or bathroom sink. Sometimes, spots and stains appear on the patina. Identify the type of stain:
Before trying any cleaning method, do your best to determine the type of stain on your copper sink. Common stains include water spots, soap scum, mineral deposits, and food stains.

Mild soap and water:
For everyday cleaning and light stains, start by using a mild soap (dish soap or a gentle liquid cleaner) and warm water. Gently scrub the stained area with a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid using abrasive pads or brushes that could scratch the copper surface!

Lemon and salt:
For more stubborn stains, try cutting a lemon in half and dipping it in table salt. Use the lemon as a natural scrubber to apply salt to the stained area. The acidity of the lemon and the abrasive action of the salt can help remove stains. Rinse thoroughly with water afterward to prevent any further staining.

Baking soda and vinegar:
Another effective natural cleaning method involves making a paste using baking soda and white vinegar. Apply the paste to the stained areas and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, gently scrub the sink with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with water afterward.

SinkSense Copper Care IQ®:
Sinkology specifically created our copper care products to help polish, shine, and protect the surface of your copper sink. Defend protective sealant works double-time: it shines your sink, while also creating a protective barrier against water and surface stains. Keep in mind that the Defend protective sealant is not designed to stop your sink’s patina from changing color.

Avoid harsh chemicals:
Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the copper finish and might make the stains worse.

Preventative measures:
To keep your copper sink looking pristine, consider wiping it dry after each use to prevent water spots. Also, avoid leaving acidic or strongly colored substances (e.g., tomato sauce) in the sink for an extended period.

Regular maintenance:
Periodically clean your copper sink to remove any residue or build-up, even if there are no visible stains. This will help maintain its appearance and prevent stains from becoming more challenging to remove over time.

Remember to always test any cleaning method in an inconspicuous area of the sink first to ensure it won’t cause damage or discoloration. Proper care and maintenance will help preserve the beauty of your copper sink and keep it looking like new for years to come.
